I recently enjoyed the movie The Greatest Showman about the winsome P. T. Barnum. He certainly had the pizzazz to possess the “greatest showman” title.
Since Christmas I’ve been reading through the Gospels and noticed a much different title highlighted . . . and it didn’t have anything to do with singing or show lights.
Pain shows tension between what I want and what I don’t have. It teaches me what needs to be placed — and replaced — on the alter for Christ. Elizabeth Elliot said, “God gives us material for sacrifice.”
Do you ever feel like you have an onslaught of material for the alter? Is that good?
One of my favorite missionary stories growing up was Otto Koning’s The Pineapple Story. He tells the account of how protecting his precious pineapples became more important than loving the PNG people he was there to reach with the Gospel. Through a series of humorous, infamous events, he finally yielded his pineapples to God. He surrendered his right to enjoy the fruits of his labors. When he got back to the States and shared his story, pineapples appeared all over the place.
